Welcome to my blog! This is my first post, and I must admit, it feels a bit daunting. I’m excited to share my journey, especially my experiences volunteering with the ISTC for over two years and my current role in organizing the TCUK25 conference.
The Start of My TCUK25 Journey
Volunteering has opened many doors for me, particularly in learning and gaining hands-on experience with WordPress, a widely used content management system. In fact, WordPress powers over 40% of all websites on the internet, making it a valuable skill. This journey has equipped me with new technical skills that have significantly improved my ability to work remotely and support my team effectively.
As part of the team preparing for this year’s TCUK conference, I created two pages for the TCUK25 website: a how-to guide titled “How to get to TCUK25” and a ticket information table called “TCUK25 – Ticket prices.” While these tasks may seem simple, the learning curve was steep. There were moments of frustration where I questioned whether I could truly contribute to the team.
Overcoming Challenges
There were times I considered giving up and telling the team I didn’t have the capacity to take on my tasks. However, I chose to persevere. Reaching out for help changed everything, and the support I received made the process rewarding.
My first attempt at building a live web page in WordPress was the how-to guide. Initially, I started with a basic HTML file containing necessary information but lacked the overall structure and design to make the content cohesive. It failed to follow the ISTC’s style guide, essential for maintaining the brand's integrity.
Seeking Guidance and Learning
Using Basecamp, our collaboration platform, I shared my draft and requested guidance from the team. In response, our webmaster organized several seminars aimed at understanding WordPress and its best practices. The knowledge I gained from these sessions was invaluable. It allowed me to turn my draft into a polished page that matched the TCUK25’s official color palette and tone.
The final version of the page was seamless and coherent with the overall website. This small project taught me much about layout, visual consistency, and creating effective digital content. It also highlighted the importance of teamwork and seeking help when necessary.
The Importance of Collaboration
Collaboration has been a cornerstone of my journey. Working with a dedicated team improved my technical skills and fostered a sense of community. Each member brought unique strengths to the project. Together, we aimed to achieve our shared goals.
Volunteering has also illustrated the significance of communication. Regular check-ins and updates within the team ensured everyone was aligned, which is crucial for remote work. For instance, we scheduled consistent weekly meetings to discuss progress and any roadblocks, keeping us motivated and focused on our objectives.
Embracing New Challenges
As I continue my journey with TCUK25, I am excited to embrace new challenges. Every task presents an opportunity for growth, whether learning a new technical skill or improving my ability to work as part of a team. I look forward to seeing how my role evolves as we approach the conference date.
For anyone considering a similar path, I encourage you to embrace the challenges ahead. Volunteering can be a transformative experience. It not only provides the chance to learn but also lets you connect with others who share your interests.
